Identity fraud now poses a significant threat to the individual, with cases of false identity, identity theft and other forms of impersonation now affecting an increasing number of victims. In the UK, for example, January to September 2007 saw 52 167 reported victims, representing an increase of 2% compared to the same period the previous year. Perhaps unsurprisingly, many identity frauds are financially-motivated, with fraudsters commonly attempting to use the victim's details as a basis for obtaining credit.
