Towards Continuous and Convenient User Authentication |
There is significant evidence to suggest that end-users face ongoing problems with traditional password-based authentication mechanisms, and alternative approaches are required that can provide more convenient and effective security. This paper begins by presenting fresh evidence of the problems encountered with existing methods, including the fact that users continue to select poor passwords, while service providers offer them little support to improve their practices. Drawing upon further evidence from the authors’ prior research, the discussion then continues to examine the route towards continuous and transparent authentication technologies, culminating in the concept of an ‘Authentication Aura’, based upon a collaborative approach operating in a multi-device environment.
