Qos/QoE Assurance in IEEE 802.11E HCCA Wireless Networks for Multimedia Transmission
Wireless networks have been the preferred access network choice for business, industry and education. However, quality provisioning remains as a challenging issue. The IEEE 802.11e amendment has been published to address this issue using the HCCA and EDCA media access, but these techniques still have a lot of drawbacks. One of the outstanding issues to be resolved is the efficient transport of video traffic over wireless environments. This poses a significant challenge for Variable Bit Rate video traffic, as the varying bandwidth requirements are unknown while the delay and loss a video can tolerate to satisfy the user is unclear. The aim of this project is to design and propose a technique to improve the performance and efficiency of transmission of video transmission over wireless networks while maximising the user-perceived quality.Mr Mohd Najwan Md Khambari
The project will start with a literature survey of the existing Quality of Service (QoS) mechanisms, particularly relating to the IEEE 802.11e standard. Due to the increasing demand for distribution of stored video over the Internet, the current state of the art of video transmission over wireless networks will also be considered, including the topics of Quality of Experience (QoE) evaluation and modelling. The review will lead to identifying a number of limitations and challenges in the current video QoE provisioning for wireless environments as well as proposing traffic scheduling solutions to overcome them. It is envisaged that an objective-based assessment method will be identified for QoE, potentially underpinned by subjective evaluation of video sequences, to support the analysis. With regards to the codec used, the project will focus on MPEG-4, as it was developed mainly for storing and delivering multimedia content over the Internet.
