Continuous Identity Verification in Cloud Computing Services

Cloud computing services have become extremely important. However, security is a major barrier which may limit further development of Cloud computing services. Therefore, one of the biggest issues in Cloud services is to verify the legitimacy of user access and subsequently identify misuse. Using traditional authentication methods to detect unauthorised activities within the Cloud are not enough because credentials might be accessed by other users of the Cloud services. In addition, the services remain accessible after initial login that might result in a lack of confidence by the legitimate user. Despite the efforts that have been conducted to enhance continuous identity verification in many fields of computing, it has not yet reached the required level of security for Cloud computing services. One of the most common techniques used to detect unauthorised users after accessing services is to record usage data to spot abnormal behaviour. However, these methods have no efficient method of detecting attackers because they have failed to extract the unique behaviour of users. Consequently, it is necessary to learn from the weaknesses of current verification methods and seek to implement an effective solution for continuous identity verification based on user behavioural profiling to ensure user legitimacy in cloud computing services.

The MPhil phase of this research will seek to develop a current state of the art understanding of continuous identity verification methods and their application within Cloud computing services. This phase will include a review of behavioural profiling and a gap analysis on its feasibility. An initial experiment will be conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of using behaviour profiling for continuous identity verification in Cloud services and seek to identify the attributes require for a successful verification mechanism
