Advanced Multimedia Analysis in Digital Forensics

Digital forensics is an investigative process that examines digital objects in order to find evidence, which is admissible in a court of law. A major challenge to digital forensic analysis is the increasing volume of digital data to be analysed. Automation has helped considerably in reducing core processing tasks, such hashing, file signature analysis, data carving and regular pattern matching. Much of this automation, however, is focused upon string-based analysis with little focus given to the analysis of images/pictures. Work has been undertaken and is still on-going that focuses upon specific forensic problems such as facial recognition and explicit image detection. However, little other work has been undertaken investigating the analysis and meta-data creation of image-based data. Through the analysis and creation of meta-data of images, it becomes possible to use existing forensic tools to more effectively process, compare and analyse large collections of image-based information. For example, being able to perform object recognition of images provides a basis for understanding similarity between images (i.e. taken in the same location/room or contain a particular object of interest (e.g. a gun)). As a result, the research will use content-based image retrieval and image metadata to extract evidence from image content that contributes to solving criminal cases more efficiently and effectively.

The MPhil stage of this research will undertake a literature review to establish the current state-of-the-art in the related area, including: digital forensic and image-based retrieval. Furthermore, experiments will be carried out to evaluate the current state-of-the-art approaches in image-based retrieval.
